Frequently the words training and conditioning are used synonymously. However these two words are very different in meaning.

Training is to teach a horse to do a specific task such as a lead change, piaffe or even simply to go correctly (from behind) on contact.

Conditioning is to develop the physical ability to enable the horse to be capable of doing a task.

One of Tristan's key areas of expertise is to determine the conditioning requirements of each individual horse. Through a hands-on therapy session she can find muscle groups that may need attention through exercise, stretching or other means. She has a well-trained eye for conformation, gaits and movement as they apply to each breed and discipline.

Taking all the information gathered during a session and a visual inspection of the horse she can then recommend a conditioning regime that will improve muscle tone and development and thus allow the horse to work to his potential in a more effective and healthy way.

When a horse is physically able to do a task, when he is conditioned for it, the training timeframe is often accelerated and much more successful. This equates to less stress on the horse, physically and mentally, thus less demanding work for the trainer.

Often clients hire Tristan to accompany them on buying trips. She uses her skills to help buyers and trainers find the right horse for the job. She does this prior to pre-purchase veterinary examinations. Tristan has saved buyers thousands of dollars by eliminating pre-purchase exams on unqualified horses so the buyer's budget for these exams is much more likely spent on the right horse.
